Countrified(ish) A-List 5/21 - 5/31

RED DAUGHTERS

CD Release Show

FRIDAY MAY 25TH @ Amsterdam Bar and Hall, St. Paul <> 9PM <> 21+ <> w/Buildings, The Goondas, and Phantom Tails <> Facebook Event Page

"A rework of seasoned flavors, Red Daughters’ self-titled album brings their previous works, Shaman Blessed and Turquoise Tomb together as one. Red Daughters are Tony Beres (bass), Mark Hanson (drums), Charlie Murlowski (guitar), Ryan Zickermann (guitar) and Hix (piano/organ). The Minneapolis quintet show their aggression, obscurity, and psychedelic look at the world in this 12 song album. Roughly influenced by the heart of The Band, the rawness of Thin Lizzy, and the daze of The Doors. Red Daughters takes the roots and thrives at creating a fresh throwback sound. The self-titled Red Daughters release party is set for this Friday, May 25 at the Amsterdam Bar in St. Paul. Don’t forget your bibs."

That's enough for me. See ya there boys!

Ok, so the word "countrified" is not the word you would use to describe these guys, but that's where the "ish" comes into play. The guys describe themselves as Indie Rock/Experimental Pop and it's actually pretty fitting. The vocals reminisce Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon and Adam Levine of Maroon 5, rolled into one and their guitar melodies catch you immediately. These guys know how to write songs and how to rock, which is proven in their latest single, Coming Down, from their new album How Your New Life Can Begin, which is out NOW!! Want a taste before you buy?? Download Coming Down >>>HERE<<<

UPCOMING SHOWS:
Every Thursday in July (5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th) @ Nomad World Pub, Minneapolis <> Joined by special guests each week <> Free <> 9PM

Too Many Parties this weekend!

Summer in Minneapolis has begun.  Kicking it off with tons of great parties and events all weekend!  But the real indicator is the start of block parties.  For the next 20 weeks or so, we're going to have a beer fest or block party of some sort. So get ready...  Sometimes it's hard working at Thrifty Hipster.

Art-a-Whirl Weekend!

There are too many good parties to note, so we'll just tell you where we'll be. FOR A FULL OFFICIAL LIST HERE IS THE LINK.

Starting Friday Night, the Fox Tax Gallery is hosting a kick-off party from 5-10pm. Party all the Time! That is the theme of this artistic glance in to the life of an adolescent; young people living a life of opposites.  Plus, Mr. Fox knows how to throw a great party (afterparty to follow).

Personally, I'm torn because the Leg Up Studio is the RAW Artists kickoff spot AND Father You See Queen will be playing.  Add in some free food from the Red Stag, and this art opening is sure to be sweet. Plus, it if does on the very off chance suck, the Leg Up Studio is in the Casket Arts Building (681 17th Ave NE #119, 55413) so there will be options.

I also promised Kate at L'etoile that we'd try to make it down to Co-Lamity at the Co Exhibitions, but it looks like they'll have DJ's and some great bands on Saturday, so I'll drop by then.

Saturday is just as much about the music as the art it's looking like!  As mentioned, the Co Exhibitions is having quite the bash; the closing party for Isaac Arvold's Second Hand Emotion exhibit with DJ Sets Get Cryphy's Last Word & Jimmy 2 Times a live performance by Wolf Lords (featuring Aby Wolf & Grant Cutler), plus a super special performance by Seawhores, complete with mind-bending multi-projector visuals and an experimental set.

I'm also planning on making it over to see our friends at Anchor Fish & Chips; they're launching their new food truck and having a little bit of a bash themselves. Starting at 2-8pm (Saturday and Sunday) with The Knightinghales, National Bird, and Romantica to name a few. (Sunday the party continues with Jen Markey, Black Audience, and Magic Castles).

The 331 Club is also a great party, and they usually are in full swing during the day! The true hipster spot, where BNLX, Buildings, Me and My Arrow, and a ton of others will be outside in their lot.
Chuck U at Art-a-Whirl 2011

Beyond Art-a-Whirl

There is plenty happening outside of Northeast Minneapolis this weekend too!

Friday Night you can join Mayor Rybak for a Ribbon Cutting in front of Vertical Endeavors on Eat Street.  Food sampling will be provided and the New Standards are playing for free!  Afterwards, we'll be having a few friends next door to help us with a keg the boys from Lucid Brewery dropped off yesterday.

Saturday Night,  George Clinton is doing a set at the Brick and that seemed awesome! Every time I see him is honestly the last time I every wore myself ragged dancing, so how could I miss that chance?

And Sunday, who could forget about the Lyn-Lake Street fest?  We were a bit worried when they didn't have a headliner 3 weeks ago, but Halloween Alaska signed down, so I went from worried to pumped in a matter of seconds! Mayda, Communist Daughter, and a bunch more will be on 2 stages, with food from the Tap House, Moto-i, and all the rest.
(of course, James Diers is next Thursday and the other guys from Halloween Alaska are playing solo sets all week at Barbette!)

The Brick-house A-List 5/17-5/20

THE BRICK-house

Nope. Not The Commodores song that we are all sick of, we're talking about the newest venue in downtown Minneapolis, THE BRICK.  They are hosting some sick shows this week that you have to know about!

After a 7 year hiatus, THE CRANBERRIES are on tour and coming to Minneapolis!!
Remember that song by the 90's band, The Cranberries, called Linger? If you don't, the video above is a comedic take on the song, to say the least. I remember slow dancing to Linger 2 feet between me and my crush at my 6th grade dance in the classy school cafeteria. Of course, he ended up dumping me halfway through the dance for the more "popular" chick. Ahh the sad awkward moments we'd love to forget. The video makes me laugh and temporarily forget about my tragic 6th grade moment, but definitely doesn't do the song justice. I think you need to see the real thing.

Date: Thursday, May 17th
When: 7pm Doors - 8pm Show (18+)
Where: The Brick, 111 5th Street, Minneapolis
Cost: $45 Adv / $48 Door <> BUY TICKETS

FACT: The Cranberries bring me awkwardly back to middle school.
EVEN BETTER FACT: They are going to rock THE BRICK!!

GEORGE CLINTON AND PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC

Seriously, do I need to say much about this show??

FUNK <> SOUL<> GROOVE. Done.

Look at this guy! You want to move? You want to groove? You want to get funky? This is the place you'll want to be on Saturday.  As Clinton has said, "funk is the DNA of hip-hop and rap." You want to see where rap and hip hop started?? So many questions that can be answered by checking out this show at THE BRICK this Saturday.

Date: Saturday, May 19th
When: 7pm Doors - 8pm Show (18+)
Where: The Brick, 111 5th Street, Minneapolis
Cost: $27.50 Adv / $30 Door <> BUY TICKETS

MPLS Decentralized Dance Party...May 12

So, The Minneapolis edition of the Decentralized Dance Party was moved back a month.  No longer April 7th, it will be on May 12th!  Here is the official FB Event invite.

An event created through Kickstarter is now funded and on it's way.
We're really looking forward to this one... The nostalgia...  It reminds me of just a few short years ago when the Freaky Deeky crew would set up keyboards in front of Heartbreakers in Uptown across from Chino Latino on the weekends and just dance.  Now, technology has gotten better and Tom & Gary, a few Canadian boys, have strapped a short-wave radio to their back and lead a party fronted by boomboxes.

This is a PORTABLE Dance Party that is going world-wide! Seattle, Portland, San Fran... most major cities will have one, so don't miss your chance to be part of history!  This is going to be complete awesomeness of the hipster variety. An infectious epidemic of fun.

How does a Decentralized Dance Party work?
  1. 100's of People Gather together with boomboxes
  2. Tom & Gary (the DJ's) wear an FM Transmitter
  3. All guests tune in to the FM Broadcast
  4. A mobile, synchronized sound system takes over the streets!
We'll have more on this awesomeness next month!

SATURDAY NIGHT FASHION & DANCING

Both events are sponsored by ThriftyHipster so stop on down and support your local website!

Early: It's a Man's World Fashion Show (7-11pm, $15-30)
If you still have some dancing left in you from Friday night's house music party, we're going to let you know about 2 of the hottest parties in Minneapolis.  First, for the guys into clothes and the women in to male models, we've got It's a Man's World Fashion show in the old Olson Advertising building in Loring Park.
Secrets Fashion Agency is in partnership with The DL Brand and Riyo Public Relations to produce and underline menswear fashion in Minneapolis. The event will cultivate menswear fashion in the Twin cities through revealing the rich culture of advanced menswear clothing and accessories for men whom appreciate the classic styles with a modern old world of menswear.
Late: Devotio Moderna - The Return- at Porter & Frye (10pm-2am, Free)
What is Devotio Moderna? Some say it's a dance party, others quote it as a state of mind. Both are correct.  Come sip classic cocktails at the newly remodeled Porter & Frye with your hosts DJ Bach, Ricky Biggs, and Gigamesh as they weave a night of hand-picked tunes to get you in the dancing and mingling mood. #HappyHour and special absinthe drinks included...

Summer is officially here! Come celebrate it with the Heart of the Beast Theater group.  This event is something they've done for 35 years and has long-standing traditions in the community.  Every year has a theme and political undertones are strong.  This is fun for the whole family and/or your crew:) We never miss it and neither should you!
